Early Life
Dido was conceived Florian Cloud de Bouunevialle Armstrong in Kensington at St. Mary Abbot’s Hospital on Christmas Day 1971. In keeping with Paddington Bear’s tradition, Dido is also celebrated an “official” birthday on 25 June because she was born on Christmas Day. Clare (nee Collins), who is a French poet, and William O’Malley Armstrong (1938–2006) were Irish publishers and former managing directors of Sidgwick and Jackson, are her parents.
Her elder brother Rowland Constantine O’Malley Armstrong was better known as Rollo, part of Faithless’s British electronica duo. Despite their names, Florian Cloud de Bounevialle was and still is known by her as Rollo. Dido considers hers to be her real name and not a stage name or nickname. As a child, Dido had to cope with the ambiguity and unorthodox nature of her birth name, which resulted in her being bullied and pretending she was an ordinary person.
In 2001 she stated, “To be called a certain thing and christened another is very confusing.” It’s something that both my parents did for us. Florian is a German name. That’s what you mean. Give your child a lot of weird characters. They were all so embarrassing. They were all so uncomfortable. I found it cruel to call me Dido, then expect me to handle it.
The legendary Queen of Carthage inspired the name “Dido.” Dido has educated at Thornhill Primary School (Islington), Dallington School. City of London Girls’ was also her school. She was taught at Westminster School by Sinan Savaskan, a contemporary musician and Head of Academic music.
When she was five, she took a recorder home from school, and her parents signed her up at the Guildhall School of Singer and Drama. She had already learned to play the recorder and piano when she was in her teen years. She studied law at the Birkbeck University of London and worked in a literary agency. She did not complete the degree and decided to study full-time in music.
Career
After briefly performing with Rollo Armstrong’s electronica music band Faithless in a collaboration, Dido launched her career and signed an Arista Records record deal in 1996. No Angel was her first studio album. It featured electronica, folk guitars, and Dido’s trademark tender vocals. Initially released in 1999, the album sold more than 22,000,000 copies and gained an even wider audience after its 2001 reissue.
Dido’s sophomore studio album, Life for Rent (2003), had four hits singles: “White Flag,” “Life for Rent,” and “Don’t Leave Home.” It was also a big success, selling more than 12,000,000 units around the globe and staying on the charts for 54 weeks. Her subsequent albums Safe Trip Home (2008) and Girl Who Get Away (2013) were also colossal successes.
Dido has collaborated extensively with many well-known international artists like Brian Eno (Cuba), Mick Fleetwood (Mick Fleetwood), Youssou N’Dour (Kendrick Lamar), and Carlos Santana. In 2013, her album Greatest Hits featured a variety of remixes along with collaborations.
